Abstract
Chapter-1: This chapter begins with a short review on carbohydrates and their structure and
then summarises some highlights from the last two decades of research on developing
carbohydrate-based drug candidates. Included is a summary of the conformational preferences
of glycosidic linkages such as, lactose (O-glycosidic linkage). This chapter includes an
introduction to C-glycosides and the concept of conformational constraint, which is one
approach to glycomimetic design investigated in this thesis work. Also mentioned in Chapter
1 is the structure and biological function of galectins (Gals) and their role in diseases.
Furthermore, a review of natural and glycomimetic ligands for galectins is included, with a
summary of their binding affinities.
