Abstract:
Besides being a popular means of communication, the mobile phone has the potential to improve the way commercial transactions are carried out in Uganda. Introducing mobile commerce in Uganda is a big challenge but it is realizable and can be of great benefit to both providers and users. The study intends to argue for creating a mobile commerce ecosystem using the existing country wide GSM network in the country. By reading expert opinions both local and international, and basing on reports publicised in respected journals it right to conclude that the level of mobile phone usage in Uganda is a stages good foundation for adopting a mobile commerce business model. This is the most practical option of taking electronic commerce to a population that has 5% internet connectivity but over 50% mobile phone subscription. Mobile commerce applications ¿ mobile banking, mobile payments - that have been successful in countries like Kenya and the Philippines can easily be adopted for the Ugandan mobile commerce environment. For this to be achieved, both government and private sectors have to work together to create a regulations and guidelines governing the provision of mobile commerce services.
